We're Not Buying into the New So-Called Intermittent Fasting Study and Neither Should You

The world of health and wellness is constantly evolving, with new research and studies emerging regularly. Recently, a study conducted by a Chinese university and shared by the American Heart Association (AHA) raised concerns about the potential health risks associated with intermittent fasting. First, let’s be clear, this is a survey not a study. And secondly, we know better because we have embraced intermittent fasting as a safe and effective strategy for our clients since 2016 and have science-backed proven methods that show it works. .

The study, again which is really not much of a study, did not take into account what these 20,000 Americans ate, or their health history, or their exercise habits. It only asked them to log when they ate; and it only required them to report that for two days.

How can the American Heart Association then, which promotes healthy diets and lifestyles itself, support a method that doesn’t even include its core values?

Moreover, the study's participant pool was limited to individuals in the United States, where the Standard American Diet (SAD) is often high in ultra-processed foods, added sugars, fats, and sodium – all of which contribute to poor health outcomes.

I talk about these flawed facts, and more, on my FASTer Way to Fat Loss podcast with guest Dr. Brent Agin, an integrative medical specialist and founder of PriorityYou in Clearwater, FL. You can get a download here.

At The FASTer Way to Fat Loss, we understand that intermittent fasting is not a diet; it's a pattern of eating. Our program encourages clients to maintain proper caloric intake during a shortened period of time, focusing on whole food nutrition and the right amount of carbs, fat and protein.

We firmly believe that intermittent fasting, when combined with a balanced and nutrient-dense diet, can be a powerful tool to lose fat, build muscle and promote overall wellness. Our own clinical study with the Applied Science Performance Institute in Tampa demonstrated that participants who followed the FASTer Way approach showed muscle gains along with lower levels of fat and cholesterol compared to those who followed the American Heart Association guidelines.

We believe this most recent study, which is unpublished, unproven and uninformed, fails to capture the nuances and complexities of intermittent fasting and its potential benefits when implemented correctly and as part of a comprehensive wellness program.

At The FASTer Way to Fat Loss, we will continue to embrace intermittent fasting as a safe and effective strategy for our clients. We will not be eliminating this practice, nor will we be omitting our monthly 24-hour fast in our VIP program. Our commitment to evidence-based practices and personalized care remains unwavering.

We encourage individuals to consult with qualified healthcare professionals and make informed decisions about their health and wellness journeys. Every person is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Our goal is to empower our clients with the knowledge and tools they need to achieve sustainable weight loss and optimal health.
