Stop Saying "I Can't" and Live the Life of Your Dreams

Bucket lists. Vision boards. Hopes and dreams journaled and posted to the front of the refrigerator. Most of us put some thought into what we want for our future selves; we write it down, we share it, and we even leave it where we can see it from time to time. But the fact is, we often let things like time, money and maybe even fear (if we really dig down deep and admit the truth to ourselves) keep us from ever realizing those things we really want.

FASTer Way to Fat Loss CEO and founder Amanda Tress doesn’t live life like that. "I don't like to use the words 'I can't'. My kids don't hear me say 'we can't'," Amanda said in a recent Coach Confessionals podcast with Pro Trainer Le Bergin, who has also taken bold steps in her life. The two talked on the podcast about taking leaps of faith and embracing change wholeheartedly.

Instead of an “I can’t,” attitude, both women look at life through the angle of ‘how CAN I make this work?” And ironically, decades apart, both of their stories cross paths in Costa Rica.

September 11, 2001, Le was a teacher and her husband was a pilot. Their world changed and was rocked to the core, like so many of us that fateful day, but things hit a little closer to home for Le and her then husband. He was flying a plane when the first tower was hit in New York; Le was in her classroom with her students trying to manage the news for all of them while also wondering and worrying about her husband. He made it home hours later, but their neighbor did not. To help mentally recover, she and her husband made a bold decision to leave the country and travel around Costa Rica for a year.

Which is just one of the moments these womens’ lives intersect: Amanda is in Costa Rica right now; a big move for her family that she calls a 12-week experiment, although Le suggests she call this an ‘experience.’

It’s not the first time Amanda packed up and made a change without letting a bunch of the “But, I can’t because….” reasons get in the way. In 2016, Amanda was on the beach in Florida with some clients when she realized she wanted to leave Ohio and move to the Sunshine State. One phone call and 24 hours later, she and her husband Brandon were planning the move, packing the car and driving with two young kids to their 1,000 square foot condo.

For Amanda, it was an easy choice of wellbeing. “The weather in Ohio was dragging me down. I truly believe I suffer from seasonal affective disorder,” she said.

While Amanda was expanding her FASTer Way business in Florida, Le had divorced, remarried and moved to Texas. But life was all but settled. The former teacher turned fitness trainer felt stuck, and was contemplating a return to the classroom, when an opportunity popped up on social media. "I was gonna quit training clients...I found you [Amanda] on Instagram and sent you an audition tape," she told Amanda. Taking that chance meant a move from Texas to Florida. Instead of ‘I can’t,” or “This won’t work,” Le figured out how to solve what others may have let stagnate them. Le started making it happen; she would take her daughter, her teenage son would stay, there would be trips back and forth over the course of the next four years, but the calculated risk and well planned adjustment led Le to a satisfying career and soul-filling purpose empowering other women to take control of their health and live their best life.

It’s almost as if these two women have lived parallel lives in different times then had their paths cross by chance and forge into one they’re on together. Even now, Amanda is walking a walk Le has already taken, filling out and color coding calendars, organizing, traveling back and forth from Costa Rica to Florida with three kids there and two kids here all while running a multi-million dollar digital fitness franchise.

You may be thinking how nice it is to have everyone in your life on board with such a big change; but that’s not the case, either. “I’ve had to stop talking to some people who don’t have the mindset,” says Amanda.

Which leads us to the final point of this story, which is not to be stopped by others; and to surround yourself with like-minded people who support and cheer you on; who aren’t bogging you down with their version of why it can’t happen and instead of helping you answer how it can be solved.

By embracing change, taking calculated risks, and being solution-oriented, these two have created lives of adventure, growth, and fulfillment. And they don't plan on slowing down anytime soon and neither should you.
