The Science Behind Your Hidden Abs

If you’re putting in the work with core exercises and healthy nutrition, but still don’t have the leaned look around the middle you want, or the ab definition you’re chasing, it’s probably because they’re just covered by a layer of fat. Here's the science behind your hidden abs and how to finally reveal them.

The Anatomy of Abs

Your rectus abdominis (the "six-pack" muscles) are just one component of your core musculature. You also have external and internal obliques that run along the sides of your torso. Even if you aren't seeing definition, chances are you've developed good muscular strength and endurance in these areas through core training.

The Fat Layer

However, a fat deposit often remains stubbornly covering these muscles, obscuring their visibility. This subcutaneous fat gets stored in the abdomen for most people, creating the "pinchable" layer on top. Oh, the muffin top.

Building Muscle First

When you first start strength training, you build muscle beneath this existing fat layer. So in the initial stages, it can actually make your midsection appear more bulky as the abdominal muscles increase in size while still obscured by fat on top.

Revealing the Abs

This is where strategic nutrition and fat loss comes in. By strategically pairing your workouts and food, your body will eventually start utilizing fat stores for energy - including that persistent belly fat. As you burn away this top layer, your toned abdominal muscles will be uncovered and become visible.

Be Patient

It takes time and discipline to reveal your abs. Stick to a whole food meal plan that promotes fat burning and muscle gains with enough protein and a healthy amount of cardio and strength training. We hate to say it, but belly fat is usually the last to go for women, so trust the process.
